Yankees starting pitcher Phil Hughes made his first rehab start Sunday for Class-A Short Season Staten Island. His stat line looked pretty good, but that wasn't the most important outcome.

Hughes had trouble early in the season -- and in the second half of last season, for that matter -- getting his velocity up into the 90s. On Sunday, he hit 95 and was sitting in the 92-93 range, according to Kevin Kernan of the New York Post, who was on hand. As for the stats, Hughes threw 61 pitches, getting through 4 1/3 innings, and allowed just three hits, one run (on a solo homer) and one walk. He struck out seven (box score via MiLB.com).

File this one under good news for the Yankees. When Hughes is throwing low-to-mid 90s, he's proved to be a solid, middle-of-the-rotation arm for the Yanks. The 24-year-old was 10-1 with a 3.17 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 82 1/3 innings before things went south last season. He had a 5.07 ERA and only 68 strikeouts in 94 innings the rest of the way.

This season was far more disastrous. Hughes has a 13.94 ERA and only three strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings -- and that's in three starts. He never got through the fifth inning and was bounced after just two innings once.

Hughes hasn't started since April 14 against the Orioles, as he's been on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. When Hughes and Bartolo Colon return from the DL, the Yankees will have a starting rotation of CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Colon, Hughes and either Freddy Garcia or Ivan Nova.

Best news we've heard regarding Phil Hughes in awhile.  If this kid can get into the 90's consistently we should start to see good things from him again.  Like most teams the Yankees could sure use an arm like that in the middle of the rotation!
