Pujols leaves with sprained left wrist

Cardinals star first baseman Albert Pujols left the game Sunday afternoon after a collision with Wilson Betemit of the Royals. There was a close play at first base -- as Pujols stretched to haul in a slightly errant throw from second baseman Pete Kozma -- and Pujols' extended left arm was run into by Betemit. Pujols left the game and appeared to be in a good amount of pain in his left wrist/hand area. The preliminary diagnosis for Pujols is a sprained left wrist. He will receive and MRI and X-Ray Monday, an off-day for the Cardinals before they host the Phillies for a three-game series, and will then be re-evalutated. His left shoulder is reportedly sore as well (Derrick Gould via Twitter).

Pujols had put the Cardinals on top, 3-2, with a home run in the previous inning. The homer was his 17th and raised his batting average to .279. After a slow start, for him, Pujols has really picked up the pace in the past few weeks. He's now hit eight home runs and driven home 14 in his last 15 games with an OPS of well over 1.200.

It's far too early to know the severity of the injury, but it's worth noting the 31 year old is incredibly durable. Pujols has never played less than 143 games in a season and has appeared in at least 154 games eight times in his 10 full seasons prior to 2011.

Pujols leaves with sprained left wrist

Just confirmed. Out for the year. Broken wrist and torn rotator. At least the Cubs will be stupid enough to sign him...

Pujols leaves with sprained left wrist

A lot of the reports I have read have been refuted by Pujols, his camp, and the Cardinals...at the same time, he had to have turned down big big money and at least 5 years this past off season, so if he is badly hurt, this would be horribly costly for him.  I think the Cardinals would offer him a deal to repay him for what he has done for the team (I hate these contracts, but they happen all the time), but it won't be the insane money he turned down earlier.

Pujols leaves with sprained left wrist

Pujols reportedly turned down a $190 million offer from the Cardinals in hopes that he could sign a $250 million deal at the end of the season.  If he doesn't return, and show power, before the end of the season, a team would be nuts to sign him to a long term, big money contract.  A potentially costly decision.

please god let em be ok. it looked on the replay he was grabbing his shoulder as much as his wrist. any significant time lose will sink us for sure. just his reaction and the way he writhed in pain worries me greatly.

Pujols leaves with sprained left wrist

That looked like the play where Derek Lee destroyed his wrist a couple years ago and was never the same.  As much as I hate the Cardinals, you hope this isnt the case with Pujols as he is damn fun to watch (I watch cardinals games on the MLB package just to watch him hit).

Maybe they need to just leave him at third where it is a little less dangerous.  Either that or teach the infielders to throw to the outside of the base, not into the runner.

Pujols leaves with sprained left wrist

First, Marlin's scrub Cousins takes out Buster Posey and now Cardinal's scrub Kozma's errant throw injures Pujols.  I hope some shlub Mets middle reliever doesn't kill Jeter with a fastball to the head this week after his 2,999th hit.
