Indians manager Manny Acta named Bruce Fields the Tribe's new hitting coach prior to Sunday's game against the Pirates. Fields replaced Jon Nunnally in the role, who was fired after an awful stretch of offense from the Indians. They have been shut out four times in June and seven times in their last 30 games. They've also been held to either one or two runs 11 times during that same span. This all coincided with a stretch that saw the Indians blow a seven game lead in the AL Central, though they've since retaken the lead with back-to-back wins over the Pirates.

Fields has been a hitting coach in the division before, as he served in the same role for the Tigers from 2003-2005. He's been the Indians' minor-league hitting coordinator since 2007, so he's very familiar with many of the Indians' current big-leaguers.

“We are confident that Bruce Fields, who is very familiar with our current players and has a vast set of experiences coaching and preparing hitters at this level, will continue the work he has done developing our hitters at every level of the organization,” Acta said in a press release.

"We felt like we needed a new voice," Acta told MLB.com.

I think it's a good move. For whatever reason, Nunnally wasn't getting through to the hitters. I think there are 5 Indians who are hitting 20 - 60 points below their career averages. Something is wrong.

Bruce Fields is a pro, hitting instruction is all he's done for many many years. As a Tigers fan, I clearly don't want him to do TOO good of a job, but he's a solid guy, I think you guys will see an improvement, but I still don't think it makes up for the incredibly "lucky" "hot" April, whatever you want to call it.

Cord Phelps thinks the firing was a good move.  As for the post below...it's "due" not "do".  I remember when we fired Eddie Murray as hitting coach.  We instantly went on an offensive tear.  This was a move to shake things up and try and get a fresh perspective in there.  Nunnally was probably not the reason for the hitting woes but something needed to be down to change the psyche of the hitters.

Everyone one of you who states that a hitting coach needs to be fired do to the fact that players aren't hitting to their full ability, needs to get the haed looked at. Does the hitting coach stand and the batters box and swing at out side pitchs that are balls? No a hitting coach can only help know what the pitcher is going to throw in certain situations. Help correct problem when they see them, it is the players that need to understand what the coach is telling them and stop doing the things that are causing the problems. Not the hitting coach.

Come on, you've got to be kidding me. Fire the hitting coach? How many AB's does he have this season? This is an attempt to wake up club. I guess Nunnally was a great hitting coach in April and May when Cleveland 30-20. What a joke.

I don't care if it's W.C. Fields that becomes the batting coach. Anything has to be an improvement. To contend in the AL, you have to score some runs. Maybe this Fields guy can do something that Nonearun couldn't.
