Zambrano's outbursts bring out his best?

It's been a little less than a week since Carlos Zambrano had a few choice words for the Cubs -- including himself, as he was saying "we" -- after a loss to the Cardinals. His first start since the incident will happen Friday night against the NL East-leading Phillies and the 2010 Cy Young winner, Roy Halladay.

On paper, it's an obvious mismatch. It may very well turn out to be one in Citizen's Bank Park Friday evening as well. But here's the funny fact of the day, courtesy of Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune: Zambrano usually fares well after an outburst.

Remember the fight against Michael Barrett in 2007? Zambrano's next outing was a 6-2 victory against the Brewers. He gave up two runs in 6 2/3 innings and struck out nine.

How about the time he tried to eject the umpire, threw a ball into the outfield and then destroyed a Gatorade cooler in the dugout? It was one of the more hilarious outbursts we've seen in recent memory and he accepted his suspension with no argument. Next time out, Zambrano went 6 2/3 shutout innings.

There was a time back in 2007 that Zambrano was booed by Cubs fans and took issue with it. He ended up apologizing to the fans and making nice. Then, next time out, he went six innings and allowed just one run while striking out five.

Remember opening day in 2005 when Zambrano told the umpire he needed glasses? His next start was 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball.

Obviously, this could merely be a coincidence. With an emotional player like Zambrano, however, it might not be. Maybe he feeds well of his emotions and is more focused next time out. I guess we'll find out in a few hours.

What is this, an excuse for supidity?

Whatever kind of fairytale you want to make out of this is certainly your call, but in reality, the bottom line is there is NO EXCUSE for this kind of stupidity, PERIOD!
