Peavy to DL with groin strain

A short statement that is becoming all too familiar for baseball writers is "Jake Peavy is headed to the disabled list." Unfortunately, we have to go there again. This time around, Peavy is going to be shelved with a strained groin muscle. The White Sox pitcher said he felt something in his May 30 start, yet still took the ball June 5 in an attempt to battle through the issue. He still has no regrets.

"Let me tell you something: If guys didn’t go out on the field because of something nagging, you wouldn’t be able to put nine guys out there tonight," Peavy said (Chicago Tribune). "You wouldn’t be able to put together a team. There are plenty of guys, as you see in the lineup, fighting with something and have been in there with me getting treatment and just trying to weather the storm. We certainly treated it, and some stuff goes the wrong way and you just push.

There's no doubting Peavy's a bulldog, so don't confuse the constant injuries as a lack of toughness. In fact, he reportedly plead with team doctors and management to not place him on the disabled list, but finally relented.

"They just said if I let it linger or get it worse, it can turn into something obviously bad that would cause me to miss major time," Peavy said. "We knock it in the head and give it a couple weeks and get back out with the boys and try to make a difference. No doubt, we’re gaining ground. We’re making strikes in the right direction."

Peavy is going to miss at least two starts, but the White Sox rotation won't be affected in a big way. They were going with a six-man rotation, so removing Peavy just puts them back to a traditional five.

Peavy is a two-time All Star and won the 2007 NL Cy Young, but he's been badly hampered by injuries since then. He made 16 starts in 2009, 17 last season and has made only five this season. He's 2-1 with a 4.66 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. We've seen glimpses of the old Peavy at times this season, specifically a three-hit shutout on May 18 against the Indians. That began a three-start span where he was 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA and only one walk in 19 innings.
