Papelbon, Marquis suspended for weekend incidents

Major League Baseball announced the suspensions of two pitchers Monday. Jonathan Papelbon of the Red Sox was suspended for three games, and Jason Marquis of the Nationals was suspended for five. Both pitchers have appealed the suspensions.

Papelbon was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount for an incident that occurred Saturday afternoon against the A's. He entered the game with a four-run lead in the ninth and blew it. During the inning, Papelbon and catcher Jason Varitek believed he was being squeezed by home plate umpire Tony Randazzo. Varitek was tossed from the game earlier in the inning and Papelbon was run one pitch into an at-bat that followed the game-tying hit. After exchanging words from afar, Papelbon charged toward Randazzo and made slight contact before being restrained by manager Terry Francona.

Marquis was tossed after hitting Justin Upton with a high-and-tight pitch in the sixth inning Sunday. Both benches had already been warned after the Nats' Jayson Werth and Mike Morse were hit in the fifth inning -- a continuation of hit batsmen that had been going on throughout the series. Because of the warning, it made sense that Marquis was ejected, but the suspension is a bit surprising considering the circumstances. The Nationals held a 1-0 lead, and hitting Upton gave the D-Backs runners on first and second with one out.

Nationals manager Jim Riggleman and Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson were also suspended for one game. Esmerling Vasquez, the Diamondbacks pitcher who hit Werth, was also suspended for three games.

The suspensions will be held in abeyance until the appeal process is completed.

Papelbon must be a sore loser, I thought Varitekwas a straight up player.  They both need to get there competitave nature in gear.  You don't yell and scream when you don't get your way.  Beat 'em at their own game Redsox!  Pitching can be a brutal position!  That ball can KO someone even with a helmet, happened to David Wright.

Randazzo should lose his job plain and simple. Since when is it okay for the umpire to be the instigator in and altercation?? Randazzo should be suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount.

Papelbon, Marquis suspended for weekend incidents

You know i thhink its funny When a player or coach in any sport messes up they get suspended.....But whe an ump, or ref messes up it's never here of an ump or ref getting suspended when they do something wrong...I think all officials instigate alot during games where altercations break out...I think It's away for them to show there authority.....Again YES suspend a player when warranted, But also suspend an official when they do wrong, and don't hold them to a higher standered then players or coaches...For exemple i will take this Boston Papelbon situation the man said he was talking to his catcher, And yet the ump i think jumped the gun and tossed him....Then there was the blown call against the Tigers pitcher that cost the kid a perfect game, Even after the official admited he blew the call, NOTHING happened to him....It's time for all sports to look into the officials and start holding them accountable for there actions.

Papelbon is definitely a hot head and deserves his suspension, but what is up with the umps being so antagonistic? I saw the play Papelbon shrugged his shoulders and made a cranky face and all of a sudden the ump starts screaming at him. This could have been avoided had the ump not fired the first shot.
