Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza has been on the disabled list since May 18 (retroactively, at least), so he is eligible to come off and face the rival Cardinals this weekend. It's just that he's not ready to do so. Tuesday night, ESPN Chicago reported Garza will not be removed from the disabled list until next week. Wednesday, reported Garza is "penciled in" to start sometime next week against the Reds. The Cubs travel to Cincy for a three-game series June 6-8.

Coincidentally, Great American Ball Park is the last place Garza pitched. He went six innings, allowing five hits and three unearned runs, striking out three while walking four. On the season, Garza is 2-4 with a 3.72 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings. His 11 strikeouts per nine innings is the best in the majors. Of the Cubs' starting rotation heading into the season, only Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster have avoided the DL.

The good news is Garza does seem to be progressing well. He threw a 30-pitch side session Wednesday afternoon with no setbacks after a pain-free session Monday and said "everything felt great."
