Scott Cousins of the Marlins barrelled over Giants catcher Buster Posey in a home plate collision that broke Posey's leg two nights ago. Since then, the talk of baseball has centered around the play -- namely, if there should be more protection for catchers and a discussion of whether the hit was dirty. Every dimension has been covered ad nauseam, but we hadn't heard from Posey himself. Until now.

Friday afternoon, Posey spoke to some Giants' beat writers and -- while remaining respectful -- he doesn't sound pleased with Cousins. Posey believes he left a lane for Cousins to slide into home plate without contact and that "[Cousins] chose to come at me." (Andrew Baggerly via Twitter)

Posey also reportedly said plays like this should be reviewed by the league and the players union and that he's not interested in talking to Cousins (Hank Schulman via Twitter), who has reportedly left several messages with Posey that haven't been returned.

“I don’t know if it really matters. If it’s something that would make him feel better … I can imagine if I was on the other end, that would be just about as difficult to know that a play you were involved in has more than likely put somebody out for the rest of the year. But again, I’m kind of indifferent, I guess.” (Extra Baggs)

Posey also said of Cousins, "I want to make this very clear: I don’t know Cousins, I’m not out to villify Cousins in any way whatsoever. It happened and it’s over with."

As for his own recovery, Posey expressed that he is likely out for the season. It's a sentiment that was reported, but then there seemed to be some hope he might make it back when it was revealed there was no damage to his knee.

funny, in the brewer-SF game last nite fielder got sent home from 2nd (probably shouldn't have been) and the ball got to the plate way before prince.  he comes in high with a double forearm blast to the catcher.  dude holds on for the out.  big big play in the game...but neither player is hurt and there's little to no people complaining whatsoever that prince's play was "dirty"...cuz it wasn't.  this is all part of the game.  prince was beat, he knew his only chance was to try to knock the ball out of the catcher's mitt.  what was he supposed to do...slow down to a trot and just give himself up?   or maybe stop dead in his tracks, tip his cap to the outfielder on a nice throw, shake the catcher's hand, and turn and walk into the dugout so nobody risks the chance of being hurt?  outside of whiners on chat boards like this, real baseball fans across the US are not even discussing posey's injury, cuz they know it's just another baseball play....sounds to me like buster's being a little bitter, but like others have said, he would have done the same thing had he been coming home trying to score the winning run...

Thunderdan posted: "Sounds like these cowards ripping Posey for being a cry baby are from the same LA gang members cruising parking lot looking to beat on woman and children to satisfy their own hollow absence of empathy and morals.  Hey losers, man up and step into the base line while I take a cheap shot at you."

Me:  I have high morals, self-esteem and it just so happens that I'm not an LA gang member.   I'll man up to meet you anywhere to get you and people like you to stop making stupid posts.  Play the game you stated, I've played catcher.  The game comes with risks and unfortunate injuries.  Posey will learn in time that whinning is not acceptable.  So maybe you should stop being a homer and look at the reality of the situation instead of making wide swooping generalizations on the character of the people who post on this board.

Your rating defies your comments.  They are not those of a higher rated member.  You seem to be yet another bitter and embattled LA fan who revels in the suffering of other teams and their players to the point of sick and unfunny innuendo.  Your weak attempts at dry humor are so easily deciphered as to make any reader yawn from utter disinterest. The only reason I respond is to say to you what I am certain all readers must be wondering: why all the hatred?

I think this is getting to the point where rules need to be reexamined.  It's one thing to have collisions; those have always been part of the game and probably should be.  But Cousins went for the hit like an NFL safety; he lowered his shoulder and extended to make contact.  A legal play as it is now, but in my mind that's a spear and a cheap shot on a defenseless player.  Posey is not blocking the plate.  I don't mind a shove or even plowing into the catcher, but Cousins took a free shot a Posey and the consequences were disaterous.  It can ruin a player's season and a whole team's season.  The highlight reel shots aren't worth it.

All you frisco boys (I use this term loosely) should know Posey would have lowered a shoulder in a heart beat at a catcher in that very same play.  If he had not got hurt he would be celebrating taking the hit.  No one was out to hurt anyone, unfortunate play but very exciting and I hope Posey recovers fully.
