Michael Young asked to learn outfield

YoungMichael Young originally came up as a second baseman. Then the Rangers asked him to move to shortstop to replace Alex Rodriguez.

Then they forced him to third base to make way for Elvis Andrus, a move he wasn't a fan of but accepted. Of course, Texas then essentially hamstrung Young into accepting a new role as a DH, which sparked a winterlong controversy. Since then, Young's been the primary DH and only just received his first day of the season off several days ago, so things have worked out.

But even still, the Rangers are moving Young around and have asked him to take lessons in becoming an outfielder, a process that will start this weekend with outfield instructor Gary Pettis, the Dallas News reports. Young is expected to be used in the outfield strictly on an emergency basis, and could have grabbed a few appearances earlier this season had the transition started taking place earlier. Texas has had to deal with a rash of outfielder injuries, with the entire starting outfield of Josh Hamilton, Julio Borbon and Nelson Cruz hitting the disabled list for extended periods of time -- where they remain.

Then, replacement center fielder Endy Chavez left the game Thursday with hamstring tightness, prompting the team to ask Young if he would learn the outfield. The consideration to outfield work had been previously considered in spring training, but did not happen because of the delicacy surrounding the relationship between Young and the team, plus Young's necessity to adjust to being responsible for playing every infield position as needed.

he is a great team player who has done whatever has been asked of him, he complained a little in the preseason but, he is a proven veteran and quickly decided what was best for the team was best for him as well. I am a red sox fan and would love to have him on our team. Classy player.

Mr Ranger will adjust and play where ever they need him.  The media trys to make it a terrible thing to force him to play different positions, but he just ducks his head and does the best he can when they put him in a new spot.  He usually does pretty well no matter where they put him and he still bats in .300+ range.  He's a true team player and does the job.
