Franklin MoralesThe Red Sox have added left-handed reliever Franklin Morales of the Rockies in echange for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Morales, 25, is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 appearances this season.

Morales has also started 15 games in his big league career, but none since 2009. He was a starter throughout his minor league career until 2010, when he made 24 appearances in Triple-A as a reliever and another 15 relief appearances with Colorado. The Red Sox are currently desperate for starters, with John Lackey and Daisuke Matsuzaka on the disabled list. The team also signed Kevin Millwood to a minor-league contract on Thursday.

Morales struck out 11 batters in 14 innings this season, while walking eight.

Boston designated Hideki Okajima for assignment to make room for Morales.

On a different topic...I am wondering what everyone thinks --  If the Mets start to falter would they make Jose Reyes available, and if so would/should the Sox make a play for him?  He is only 27 and plays SS which is our weakest position. Not sure who the Mets would want in exchange but I was wondering what thoughts there was out there.

If Morales threw right handed in a game, he would still be a better option than Okejima or some of the other pi**ers they've used.  Plus they get him for almost nothing.

@ RonBoss

I don't see what they have to lose by obtaining Morales (except for a few late inning leads) considering how thin their staff is currently, but just for the sake of argument, two guys in their own system have been lights out this year--

Andrew Miller who opponents are hitting .157 off of in AAA.

Michael Bowden who opponents are hitting .159 off of in AAA.

Pretty soon they should have Jenks back, and Wheeler and Doubront as well. And for as bad as Lackey has been and as erratic as Daisuke is from outing to outing (what else is new?), Papelbon and Beckett have both been excellent this year and everyone was freaking out about them before the season started, and even as thin as they are right now, they're still one of the hottest teams in baseball so you have to take the good with the bad.

The Rockies bullpen fas been nothing short of terrible lately. If they are willing to part with Morales, it is because they need help in the worst way and have to start somewhere. They have blown plenty of leads and they don't feel like they can count on Morales to help, so he's out. Maybe some new scenery will wake him up, but the Rockies need help if they are going to the playoffs.

Last year Franklin Morales was a better pitcher then he has shown this year. He is a pitcher that if he throws regular innings is much better Rockies worked him about once a week. Now if the Red Sox use him a little more he will surprise you. He wanted out of Colorado so a new chance with the Red Sox might be a blessing. Only time will tell.

Now let me guess...Will Terry make him a starter, a 7th inning pitcher, an 8th inning pitcher, or someone to just eat up innings? Francona brings people in to pitch depending on which inning it is. A starter has to be pitching a no hitter to pitch a complete game. A closer has to come in for the 9th inning only...a setup man for the 8th inning only. It doesn't matter how good or bad a pitcher is throwing..it depends on what inning it is. Pretty soon all Red Sox pitchers will be wearing the inning number on their backs so Terry will know which one to put in the game. The game sure has changed from the days of strategic moves. Its all about the money I guess.
