Bryce Harper update: He's destroying the ball

By Matt Snyder

Last season's top overall draft pick by the Washington Nationals, Bryce Harper, won't be in the majors any time soon, but he's certainly due a promotion to a higher level of the minor leagues at this point.

The 18-year-old phenom is absolutely pulverizing Class A pitching for Hagerstown. He's currently hitting .376 with 11 doubles, seven home runs, 24 RBI, 11 doubles and a .1.155 OPS in 29 games. He's even stolen five bases.

You could argue that's a small sample, but I'd argue it's big enough -- and the numbers are staggering enough -- that he's due a trip to a higher level in the minors.

There's no reason to rush a player with this kind of upside, especially since he's only 18 and the Nationals are looking to the future instead of the present, but when he's ready, he's ready. It won't do him any good to continue to punish inferior talent.

The catcher-turned-outfielder came out of the draft with massive hype, but it appears that so far he's at least meeting expectations, and I'd argue he's exceeding them.

If he continues to hit like this at a higher level, he may even land in the majors in 2012 ... before he even turns 20.

Why is he still in the Minors? He can help the Nationals and if he doesn't... What difference does it make? The Nationals aren't a 1st place team anyway. He will destroy the ball in the Majors.

What's more impressive is that he hit .231 before he got a prescription for contact lenses (it's a wonder he hit anything). And since changing his prescription, he's hitting over .480. I know he has other parts of his game to bring up to the major league level, but hitting is definitely not a worry.

Harper has extended his hitting streak to 15.  He went 4 for 5 ( 1 HR, 5 RBIs).  His stats are: .396/.472/.712  Clearly, low A ball has become glorified batting practice for him.  He's facing a lot of southpaws too.  Time to move him up to Class A Advanced or AA.

If he wasn't such an egotistical jerk, I'd root for him. (Sadly, he is merely the product of his egotistical, jerkoff parents.) Until he quits believing his own press releases, he's just another self-serving clown.

Bryce Harper update: He's destroying the ball

Saw him play on Saturday (5/8).  To my untrained eye, he had difficulty staying back on the change and breaking stuff.  Although he went 2-5, he struckout twice and GIDP.  Not the best night, but, he saved it by scorching a ball into right to make the finale interesting.  He's still a kid and needs some seasoning. I say let him rip it up some more in Single A ball then bring him up a level around mid-season to see how he adjusts.  He's gonna be good but, he'll have to be great to live up to all this hype.

This kid is going to be a hell of a player in the majors someday. I'm glad to see that the Nationals seem to know what they're doing but bringing him along slowly. I hate it when young talent gets pushed to far and put into bad situations. It happens all the time in the NFL with young QB's. I look forward to seeing him become a great player for years to come.
