Chase UtleyChase Utley will head to Florida on Friday to begin working out at the Phillies' spring-training complex and prepare for extended spring training games,'s Jim Sallsbury reports, citing sources.

Utley and the Phillies have kept mum about the status of the second baseman's knee and general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. even deflected direct questions about Utley's status on Thursday.

Utley spoke on Wednesday, but didn't say much other than he was "getting closer."

Still, Utley has participated in two simulated games over the last few days and the News Journal's David Hale writes Utley took grounders at second on Thursday and looked like he was moving better.

If Utley is participating in extended spring games by Monday, it's possible he could be back in the Phillies lineup by the end of the month, something that will make the Phillies and their fans feel quite a bit better.

The deep rotation is clearly a luxury.  Utley doesn't have to rush his return.  Nor does Dominic Brown.  Oswalt can skip a start or two to make sure his family and friends are ok down in Mississippi.   Ibanez can go 0-for the month of April.  The biggest worry about the Phils might be that the regular season is all too easy for them to control and they won't develop a sense of urgency about the post-season until it's too late.  That probably won't happen, given that they're a veteran team with recent playoff experience.  They seemed playoff-ready last year.  The Giants were just a little bit hotter at the right time is all.

Valdez has already hit into 4 double plays.... not the most on the team, not even close.  but for a guy that only get singles this is unacceptable.  I can't wait to see him off the field.

We may be winning, but the schedule so far has been incredibly favorable.  We will need his bat as we being playing Atlanta, Colorada, SF, Florida and some of the AL teams in interleague play...

It wasn't like the Phillies weren't winning without Chase Utley, so it would be best if Utleytook things nice a slow, and not come back too soon. The Phillies are playing well, and their pitching has been great. Even Raul Ibanez is starting to hit, so that's an added bonus and Charlie tweaked the lineup and put Placido Polanco in the 3 slot, Shane Victorino in the 2 slot and Jimmy Rollins in his old familiar leadoff position. The Phillies are now scoring runs, o all is well.

Come back soon Chase...we need you, but take your time.

Utley headed to Phils' spring training complex

This is a good bit of news to hear.  Soon, Chase Utley will be back and solve all the Phillies offensive woes and they can start winning some ball games and finally get back in contention.

Wait, what's that you say?  The Phillies are already ahead of everybody?  Well, that's something isn't it!  The Phillies could get better at already being one of the best.  Great!  (don't you just love partial sarcasm?)

Go Phillies.

It sounds like we agree on the big picture that the Phillies can win, but I have to disagree with you about a few things in the details.  Rollins is my favorite player for the Phillies, but all he's proven is that he is doing what he is supposed to now because he got his way like a spoiled child.  Rollins is on record saying he only wants to hit leadoff.  He thinks he is the new Rickey Henderson, and can't get that idea out of his head.  Regardless of all that, the team feeds off of his swagger.  As long as Polanco is as hot as he is he should be hitting in the three hole. I know Charlie will put Utley in the three hole because he is loyal to a fault (not a good thing), but that doesn't mean its the right choice. The only thing Ibanez is "interchangable" with is a bag of bats and balls.  He is done.  His so-called break out efforts have been with pitches thrown by the Nationals traveling less than 85 mph.  The corners of the outfield look as if it will be a three man effort between Brown, Francisco, and Mayberry.  Ibanez will play because he is making 13 million, but I bet he will only playing when the pitching matchup is favorable to a guy who has lost his bat speed.  Especially when Dom is ready and healthy.  I don't agree with the statement that Valdez is "very unreliable at the plate".  He's not going to break Pete Rose's all time hit record, but has shown he can put the ball in play.  Last year he was a DP machine, but it does not look to be the case this year.  The guy is also solid defensively, which can't be ignored because part of the Phillies success is built on being strong up the middle.

They can win and they have been winning without Utley. Fact is though, they can be better. utley being out changes the entire dynamics of that line up. Rollins has proven this week that he is a better lead off man than Victorino. Polanco is perfect at two and Utley needs to bat third. Brown, Mayberry, Ibanez Francisco and Victorino are interchangeable at 5, 6, 7 with Ruiz at 8.  Valdez is very unreliable at the plate and grounds into way too many dp's. Missing Chase confuses the top of the order and severely weakens the bottom.

Well, the Phightin's have hung in there without Utley.  Jayson Werth just got a three day lesson on how its going to feel to be a very rich loser.  His bat is missed, that goes without saying.  The Phillies might only have 4-6 losses if Werth's bat was still present in the lineup.  His replacement Cliff Lee has been "okay"...but the truth about him is that he is here for the playoffs.

As well as the Phillies are playing I hope that Chase does not come back until it can be for good.  The reality is (in my opinion) Chase Utley will probably only be able to play three or four games a week.  Its not like he is "healed"...the pain is just decreasing.  With the pitching as good as it is, why can't the Phillies win with Utley and a very game Wilson Valdez???
