By Matt Snyder Cardinals third baseman David Freese broke a bone in his left hand Saturday when he was hit by an errant Scott Linebrink fastball. He's headed to the disabled list Monday, in all likelihood, and may even require surgery to correct the injury. (MLBlogs )
With Nick Punto and Skip Schumaker also injured, the Cardinals' infield is paper thin. Daniel Descalso will be the third baseman with Freese out while Tyler Greene will man second. That alignment (with Ryan Theriot at shortstop) leaves the Cardinals without any viable backups at second, third or short. Interestingly, Albert Pujols played third with Lance Berkman at first late in the game Sunday, though that doesn't seem like a realistic move for a full game, considering Pujols hadn't played across the diamond since 2002.
