Ruiz leaves game with injury, Brown progressing

Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz left early in Wednesday afternoon's game at Arizona with back tightness. (Matt Gelb via Twitter) He was replaced by Brian Schneider.

The 32-year-old Ruiz is hitting .230 with two home runs and nine RBI, though a lot of his value is brought defensively. He did hit .302 with a .400 on-base percentage last season, but that appears to be an offensive outlier when compared to the rest of his career.

The Phillies have endured quite a few injuries -- both major and minor -- thus far in 2011, so the situation is obviously worth monitoring. Speaking of which ...

Highly-touted rookie Domonic Brown has missed all of the regular season so far with a broken hamate (hand/wrist area) bone. He recently hit two home runs in an extended spring training game and officially began his minor-league rehab assignement Wednesday. It went quite well. The 23 year old went 2-4 with a home run. Often times when a player is coming back from a hand or wrist injury, the main concern is a possible loss of power. Even playing against lower-level minor leaguers, Brown's performance the past two days should alleviate any of that.

Instead, the focus will be on how he can handle major-league pitching when he's ready to come back. He hit .327 with a .980 OPS, 20 home runs, 68 RBI, 65 runs and 17 stolen bases between Double-A and Triple-A last season before being promoted to the bigs. In the majors, Brown didn't fare quite as well, though he hardly saw everyday playing time. He appeared in 35 games, picking up 70 plate appearances. He ended up with a .210 average, .612 OPS, two home runs, 13 RBI and two steals.

Brown would be battling Ben Francisco and John Mayberry for playing time in the Philly outfield.

There is a drastic need for him to come back jmurray and ur last statement nailed it. Ibanez needs to be relegated to pinch hitting duties, and platoon Brown Francisco and MAyberry in right and left depending on matchups and the hot bat. Ibanez is ioast. We need to get Utley back also to get VAldez out of the lineup and move Victorino down to 6th in the order where he belongs.

ben francisco is tearing the cover off the ball.  No need for him to come back unless they want to bench Ibanez!
