Mike Leake has been arrested by Cincinnati police on suspicion of theft. ( )

Leake, 23, is alleged to have taken six American Rag shirts valued at $59.88 total from Macy's department store in Cincinnati. Security cameras reportedly caught him removing tags from several shirts and attemping to leave the store without paying for them. He was arrested just two hours before the Reds pitchers were expected to arrive at Great American Ball Park to ready for a game against the Pirates Monday night.

He has been booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center. If convicted of theft, the sentence would be a misdemeanor that carried a maximum of 180 days in jail. Leake will make $425,000 this season as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.

Leake was the eighth overall pick in the 2009 draft and went directly to the majors for the start of the 2010 season. He was the 21st player to do so since 1965. He got out to a hot start but cooled later in the season, ending 8-4 with a 4.23 ERA. With a few injuries to expected starting pitchers, he has rejoined the rotation for this season. He's 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts.

Considering the incident just happened a few hours ago, it's hard to say how this event will affect his standing with the team.

There is a copy of the police report available on -- where Leake said the address of his employer is "Reds Stadium."

The Reds have released the following statement:

"On behalf of the Cincinnati Reds organization, at this time we are advised to not publicly address this matter because of the pending legal proceedings. However, we do not condone behavior of the type alleged, which is wholly inconsistent with the principles of this organization and our community and is detrimental to the positive direction we seek to follow. When the legal process has been completed, we will handle this matter internally."

Also, there's been a statement released on behalf of Leake. Here it is:

"Today, Mike Leake was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of theft from the Macy’s store downtown. Right now, he has been advised by his attorney to offer no further statements on this matter. This case will proceed in the justice system, where Mike’s story will be told. Until that time, there will be nothing further from Mike on this episode until the court proceedings have concluded. However, Mike wishes to apologize to his family, the fans, Mr. Castellini, [general manager] Walt [Jocketty], [manager] Dusty [Baker], his teammates and the entire Reds organization for this distraction."

Reds' starting pitcher Leake arrested for theft

I am a Phillies fan to.  But I have no sympathy here.  Mike Leake, besides being dumb, really hurt the Reds.  And yeah the front office said they were embarassed.  Well I think Dusty Bakers gonna send him down just to make a point.  I heard the guy had $300 in his pocket at the time of the bust.   Maybe the T-shirts look cooler if they are lifted?  Has anyone checked the store cameras from wherever he bought his last suit?  That might be a much bigger scam.

This kind of extremely negative publicity DOES hurt the team.  The happy go-luckiness goes out of the balloon.  I will be surprised if this does'nt precede a Cincinnati losing period.  Now, it's even out that Leake is gonna start in a couple of days.  Are you kidding me?  He might get booed off the mound.

each shirt was only worth 9.99.  you are STEALING that???  but then this is cincinnati.  The town where Ray Malaluga drives a '99 pontiac sunbird into a parking meter, deion sanders intentionally drove his scooter off a cliff (the news covered that one up, but it really happened), and where chris henry punches out a valet.  art schlister, the gamlbing nut, lived there for a while too.  something in the water.

Ahhhh now this clears up alot of things.  The case of Cueto's missing Jock itch cream is solved!!  Good thing it wasn't one of the Red's pitchers that can actually pitch.

I just dont think someone with Mike Leake's money steals cheap stuff cause he's cheap it's more of the thrill of steal and in  which he has serious mental issues and needs counciling.

Don't be so sure man.   If you'd like I'll take 30 minutes to provide you with a list of a ridiculous number of pro athletes that are broke or bankrupt. Some of the people I'm talking about have made a lot more money then Leake has seen so far in his career yet couldn't control their spending habits.  The one guy that comes to mind is Jamarcus Russell in the NFL.  The kid by the age of 24 had grossed 35 million dollars in football alone plus endorsements a number er 1 overall pick always gets probably taking that total closer to 50 million dollars.  But you know what?  A few months ago he lost his 2.4 million dollar house because he was 2 hundred thousand dollars behind in payments.
Also, don't know if you read the story yet but its been reported that 10 percent of NFL players have already committed to and recieved very high interest loans and another 20 percent will be doing the same thing if there is a lockout.     I could go on and on but I think you understand what I'm saying.....  there are plenty of athletes that are broke so it wouldn't surprise me at all if this kid is.

Reds' starting pitcher Leake arrested for theft

While I agree that Philly fans have demonstarted their stupidity over the years(ie booing santa claus and cheering for paralysis of Michael Irvin)I think this issue is a little bit deeper than shoplifting or kleptomania. In my opinion its about athletes thinking they are above the law. He thought hed get away with this, sure but Im sure at the very worst he would talk his way out of it by saying do you know who I am? or heres an autograph and a couple tickets to see the Reds. People in sports need to be held accountable for their actions just like us Joe Schmos otherwise theyll keep doing boneheaded things and getting slapped on the wrist with some measly fine or community service. Heck even Gloria James used the Do you know who I am line, and last time I checked shes nobody.

This is why pitchers should NEVER try to steal.
