No surprise: Yankees top payroll by large margin

By Matt Snyder

The specific total payroll numbers for each major-league club in 2011 have been released by USA Today . To the surprise of no one who follows the sport, the New York Yankees sit comfortably atop the sport, checking in at a payroll of $202,689,028. The average player salary for the Bronx Bombers is $6.76 million.

On the other hand, the team with the second-highest payroll actually did come as a bit of a surprise, as the Phillies' near $173 million is ahead of the Red Sox ($161 million and change), who were third.

The Angels, White Sox, Cubs, Mets, Giants, Twins and Tigers rounded out the top 10. Two more teams have a nine-figure payroll (Cardinals and Dodgers).

On the bottom end, the Kansas City Royals were dead last, with a paltry $36,126,000 payroll. The Indians, Padres, Pirates and Rays all also have a payroll under $50 million for the season.

The list is sure to stir up the fight pitting fans of the "have" teams against those who cheer for the "have nots," but let's all keep in mind the operating income -- as the Yankees made money last year while the Tigers, Red Sox and Mets lost money. And some of the small market teams are making good money. The Padres had an operating income of over $37 million, for example. All this proves is that while the system has flaws, don't expect it to drastically change anytime soon. When 27 of the 30 teams are making money, there's no incentive for change.

Look, if you think that winning a World Series when you outspend all your competition except for one by tens of millions is an accomplishment, then have at it. I don't. MLB could contract to about 6-8 teams, and it wouldn't change a thing. In fact, they should do that. Go back to the days of like 6 teams. Then all you east coast losers can enjoy your little so-called world championships. In some ways, the Red Sox are worse than the Yankees, because all they do is whine about the evil empire, when they are just like them. By the way, I've been to Fenway Park. It's a great park if you like the smell of urine mixed in with the scent of spilled beer and stale hot dogs. You want to talk about a joke. Playing in a literal crap hole like that is a joke. Try adding some bathrooms so that people won't piss on the floor so much. Boston is in no place to look down on anything.

sorry cavs fan...the joke is your view on this

you go back and look at every wolrd series winner and runner up for the last decade and you will discover its more than a blip on the screen...there is actually more parady amongst world series teams than in football and basetball....allthough the same 6 or 7 teams spend the most each year, it does not give them a pass to the fall classic, history shows that.....the players dont deserve a share ofthe profits....who do you work for ?? does your boss whack up the profits with you at the end of the year ??  they are employees, and get paid to do a job, they , or any other athlete are not entitled to a share of the pie...the yanks dont care abotu paying luxury tax...or they wouldnt spend the money they do...they want to win, and at whatever the price is, they are good with it, they are not doing nothing wrong....baseball is by far the best sport going...i love football...love it...but basball is america...its the great american sport where you can go watch a game with your father, son, or someone special, and feel special to be watching.....like i said, i am a sox fan, and my team spends money to try to win, and thats great for me,if i was in pitts, or cleve, i would probably not feel the same, and i wouldnt stop until i got my team to spend...at all costs...but thats you..not me cousin.....jokes on you cleveland...always has been

Paying a luxury tax is not the same as everyone playing by the same rules. So, I guess you are correct in that the Yankees pay money to MLB that gets distributed to the smaller market teams, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they have a huge advantage in paying money up front to sign players, and it doesn't even matter if those players produce or not. The Yankees just throw more money at someone else. True competition would mean that everyone plays by the same rules. That would mean a salary cap, of course, which is where the greed of the players comes in. What I would demand is that if there is a salary cap, then the owners would need to open their books, and they would have to have a salary cap too. Anything left after the cap gets equally distributed between the owners and players. Its fair, and it would work. But it won't happen, so we will continue to have the same old teams in the playoffs, with an occasional blip on the screen like the Giants. MLB is a joke.

thats probably one of the worst posts i have read in some time on here....talk about not knowing what the hell you are talking about....the yankees are a biz, and the main goal of a biz is to make money...and they do...its that simple...i hate the yankees more than anyone...but i tip my hat to all yank fans, every year the owner tries to win at all costs....and from a fans view, thats all you can ask for....there is no salary cap in baseball numbnuts, so they are not doing anything wrong...not surprised 1 bit you are from , or a fan of cleveland teams...you talk about the biggest joke town in all of sports...you right in the middle of it, and now without lebron, the entire sports nation in cleveland is GROSS !!!!!...the yanks have produced a ton of talent picking at the end of drafts every year..i know you said last 10...but jeter,posada,rivera,pettitte....all home grown my sister...all home grown...cano aint to shabby either....they have solid players from their farm system all over baseball.....but they are playing for other teams cause they got traded for major league ready players...they are playing within the rules of baseball...dont hate the yanks....hate the rules they play by...i am a red sox fan...and we spend our share and then some, and doing so with only 38k seats...not 60 k like some teams, and we put a good prouduct out there every year...and you want home grown boston buds..??? here you go...youk,pedroia,pappelbon,lester,bucholz,hanley ramierez ( boston drafted and groomed ) ellsbury, bard, ad there are many, many more playing in the bigs....so go iron your skirt sally...mommy is calling you....next time know what you are talking about before you flap your crap

Everyone is directing their anger in the wrong direction.  Aim it toward the players and the Players union.  Players jump ship for the money there is no team loyalty anymore.  The unions and players are greedy.  Trust me owners don't want to spend 202M!
