2011 Mets already the butt of jokes

We're only two games into the 2011 season and the Mets appear to be an easy punching bag for comedians both professional and amateur.

After Friday's loss in the opener in Florida, a SNY technician inserted an audio clip from the show Family Guy over a shot of the team walking off the field, angering SNY executives.

"It was a very poor decision by an employee," a network spokesman told the New York Post. "The matter is being dealt with internally."

Here's the clip from Family Guy where Stewie Griffin notes Halloween is "a bigger letdown than being a Mets fan."

On Thursday, comedian Chris Rock was a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman and he voiced his compaints about being a Mets fan, taking shots at the ownership situation.

Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz dismissed the SNY incident.

"You can't react to criticism," Horwitz told the Post. "We're New York; you have a thick skin."

2011 Mets already the butt of jokes

Dood, I love the Mets, but I think you're being a little overly optimistic.  Yeah, yeah, two of three against the Marlins, in Miami, but damn, it's only April 4th.  I'll be happy if the team cracks 80, as long as they play hard.... and the Wilpons fade into obscurity, eventually.

2011 Mets already the butt of jokes

I'm a Phillies fan, but think the jokes about the Mets are out of line.  Yes, they've had late season collapses lately, but are not NEAR as hapless as many other teams in the two leagues.  Watch out - this may be the spark they need to really perform.  Don't forget - they're playing at .667 right now.

2011 Mets already the butt of jokes

I am a lifelong Mets' fan and have seen some really bad Mets' teams, however, since the beginning of their existence
in 1962, 18 other teams have won the same or less titles. Yes, I understand that they have choked lately and the ownership's
problems are obvious but look at the Cubs, Indians, Padres, Astros etc. There are many other teams with longer droughts,
and I for one think they will compete this year.

2011 Mets already the butt of jokes

Excellent post Starblazer! As I wrote in another post, it's cool to rip on the Mets......doesn't take my writing skill to just copy and paste what every other columnist and writer is publishing. No one has anything to say about the fact they won a road series against a team many called a sleeper to win the division. Whatever, let it play out on the field.........if they are as bad as everyone writes, then so be it. If they are a winning team, I'm curious how many writers will jump on the bandwagon talking about how they knew the Mets would turn it around......

2011 Mets already the butt of jokes

Speaking as a Phillies fan, I must say that it's kind of depressing what's happened to the Mets over the last few seasons. I really enjoy rooting against the Mets, but when a team is this awful and dysfunctional, it's like rooting against a paraplegic with a learning disability. It just makes you feel like a bad person.

2011 Mets already the butt of jokes

By C. Trent Rosecrans
You are the biggest joke of all.

The Mets just took 2 of 3 from the Marlins and had 2 outstanding performances from their starters. Their bench is stronger than it's been in years with Harris, Hairston and Murphy ready to come off hacking. They also will get back Paulino soon and he's not only a decent catcher, but a good guy to come off the bench.

The Mets have 2 solid young players here from the get go in Davis and Thole who weren't here last year on Opening Day. They've added 2 real pros to the backend in Young and Capuano. Reyes and Wright are perennial all-stars. They have 2 rule 5 free-agents hungry and already contributing in Emaus and Beato. They've also added solid pros in Buchholtz and Carrasco to go with a young and potentially solid set-up guy in Parnell.

The Mets have a GM with a brain and a plan. Their manager actually knows how to double switch and they're showing how aggressive they'll be this year with Terry leading the way.

In the end, the jokes won't be directed towards the Mets, but uninformed, unfunny cretins like you.

Hardy har har.
